VIENNA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- It is "imperative" to resume the six-party talks and bring the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula back to a track of dialogue and consultation, a senior Chinese diplomat said Thursday.
"The situation at the moment on the Korean Peniunsula and in northeast Asia is still complicated and sensitive," said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.
"While the six-party talks remain stalled, the recent emergence of DPRK's uranium enrichment issue has caused widespread concern in the international community," Hu said.
China had suggested an emergency consultation among heads of delegation to the six-party talks in Beijing in early December, Hu told a board meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
"It is China's view that under the current situation, all relevant parties should keep their eyes on the overarching objective of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and peace and stability in northeast Asia, and must remain calm and restrained," Hu said.
They should do more to help ease the situation and contribute to maintaining peace and stability on the Peninsula and in the region, he said.
Hu noted that the six-party talks played an important role in easing tensions among relevant parties, advancing the denuclerization process on the Korean Peninsula, and maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in northeast Asia.
By resuming the six-party talks, Hu said, "we can not only keep the situation under control, but also seek proper solutions to the concerns of relevant parties within the framework talks, with a view to searching for the eventual solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula."
