Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Statement on the US Decision to Table An Anti-China Resolution
2004-03-25 00:00

The US decision to table an anti-China resolution at the 60th Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights is a severe interference in China's internal affairs. The Chinese government and people express strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the US move.

The Chinese Government always attaches importance to the promotion of human rights and has earnestly implemented the relevant human rights convention it has acceded. Over the past year, China has been vigorously working to promote democracy, the legal system and the judicial reform by taking various steps to protect human rights. The clause "to respect and protect human rights" was integrated in the Constitution at the 2nd Session of the 10th NPC Plenary, which is of great significance. China has made remarkable progress in the protection of human rights, which has been widely appreciated by the international community. It is true that there are some differences between China and the United States on the issue of human rights, which, as China always maintains, should be properly addressed through dialogue and exchange on the basis of equality and mutual respect. China has made unremitting efforts and showed utmost sincerity and flexibility in this regard.

The United States broke its promise by willfully pushing forward an anti-China resolution. It is rather driven by domestic politics rather than the care for human rights and it is an attempt aimed at interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights. The US decision has politicized the human rights issue, and therefore tarnished the sacred cause of human rights. Such an unpopular attempt will be futile.
