Q: Deputy US State Department spokesman made a statement on the 25th anniversary of the the Taiwan Relations Act on April 9. What is your comment?
A: The so-called Taiwan Relations Act, enacted unilaterally by the United States in 1979, has infringed on China's sovereignty, intervened in China's internal affairs, and run counter to the principles of the three joint communiques between China and the United States. The Chinese Government has been resolutely opposed to the act from the very start.
What must be noted is that the three Sino-US joint communiqués are the political basis for Sino-US relations The United States should strictly abide by the principles enshrined in the communiqués as well as its commitments to China. The United State should stop implementing the so-called Taiwan Relations Act, and not send any wrong message to "the Taiwan independent" forces in order not to damage the peace across the Taiwan Straits and the steady development of Sino-US relations.
